A recent AARP Public Policy Institute and Dēmos survey found that people 50 and older carry more credit card debt on average than younger people. The report shows older households had an average credit card balance of $8,278 in 2012, and they used their cards to pay for basic living expenses like rent or mortgage payments, groceries or utilities.
