The Inca’s built Machu Picchu, 7,972 feet above sea level, in the 15th century and ruled their empire from here. After a small band of Spanish soliders led by Francisco Pizarro conquered the Inca’s in the 16th century the culture faded and the jungle took over this astonishingly beautiful site. Locals led Hiram Bingham, an American explorer, and he “discovered” it in 1911.
