Bombing Suspect Captured

Police captured Ahmad Khan Rahami in Linden, New Jersey, today after they wounded him in a shootout.  Law enforcement officials launched a manhunt for Rahami Monday morning. The FBI and NYPD identified the 28-year-old naturalized American, originally from Afghanistan, as a suspect in the Chelsea bombing that injured 29 people on Saturday night.

Video on Channel 7 Eyewitness News shows Rahami, eyes open and alert, strapped to a gurney, with paramedics wheeling him into an ambulance.

Two officers were wounded in the gun battle. Rahami allegedly shot one officer in the hand and another in his bullet proof vest.

Rahami worked in a restaurant called First American Chicken in Elizabeth, New Jersey.  Earlier Monday morning a pipe bomb exploded near the Elizabeth train station as an FBI bomb squad robot tried to diffuse it.

At a news conference police officials and the FBI said they identified Rahami through surveillance video at the scene on 23 Street where the bomb went off, and on 27 Street where they discovered a second bomb before it exploded.

FBI Agent-In-Charge of the New York Bureau William Sweeney said investigators also linked Rahami to a bomb that went off before a military charity run in Seaside Heights, New Jersey.

Officials say they have “no indication” that Rahami was part of a larger terrorist cell. FBI Agent Sweeney said they did not arrest the five men stopped in a car on the Belt Parkway on Sunday night.
